Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that blocks the gastric H⁺/K⁺-K-ATPase enzyme in parietal cells, thereby suppressing gastric acid secretion. It is highly effective in treating and preventing gastric and duodenal ulcers, including those associated with NSAID use.
- Othera 20 mg: Each MUPS tablet contains Esomeprazole 20 mg (as Esomeprazole Magnesium Trihydrate USP).
- Othera 40 mg: Each MUPS tablet contains Esomeprazole 40 mg (as Esomeprazole Magnesium Trihydrate USP).
Common: headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, flatulence, dry mouth.
Long-term use (>1 year) may slightly increase risk of hip, wrist, or spine fractures.
GERD / Erosive Esophagitis (Adults ≥18 yrs): 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks
Maintenance (Adults ≥18 yrs): 20 mg once daily
NSAID ulcer risk reduction (Adults): 20 mg once daily for 4–8 weeks
H. pylori eradication (Triple therapy): 20 mg twice daily for 7 days (with Amoxicillin 1000 mg & Clarithromycin 500 mg)
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: 40–80 mg twice daily
Children (1–11 yrs): 10–20 mg once daily depending on weight & condition
Not recommended in children <1 year
Administration note:
Swallow whole with water; do not chew or crush. Can be dispersed in half a glass of non-carbonated water and taken immediately (within 30 min).
Use with caution during pregnancy.
Excretion in breast milk not confirmed – caution advised in nursing mothers.
Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or formulation components.
Use with caution in patients with severe liver dysfunction or renal impairment.
Monitor if used long-term due to potential fracture risk.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
